Choosing AI development tools for electronics and hardware

AI tools for electronics fall into three groups: chat assistants that answer questions about a circuit, agents that work in your design files and EDA tools, and services that automate a single step such as routing. Choose by the job you need done and by which tools the AI can reach.

Adom Hydrogen is a desktop workbench in the second group. It runs the AI agent you choose (Claude, Codex, Antigravity, Kimi or Grok) alongside an editor, distributor search and open-source bridges into KiCad, Altium Designer and Fusion 360. Parts you make in it can be published to the Adom Wiki, a shared library of more than 20,000 hardware pages plus apps and AI skills.

What the AI needs for each job

Job What the AI needs What to check
Choosing parts Live distributor data and current datasheets Exact part numbers, ratings, package and stock
Schematic capture Access to your project files and component libraries Pin mapping and the ERC report
PCB layout Placement and routing in your EDA tool The DRC report and manufacturing previews
Firmware A build environment and your hardware Compiler output and tests on the board
Team sharing Versioned libraries and tools with access control Whether a teammate can repeat the result

A chat assistant in a browser can explain a datasheet, but it can only edit your KiCad project if something connects it to KiCad. Hydrogen’s bridges make that connection; How do I let Claude control KiCad? shows the setup, and Where can an AI agent find KiCad symbols, footprints and 3D models? covers parts.

Test a tool on your own board

  1. Pick one real task on a copy of a project, such as choosing a regulator or placing one section of the board.
  2. Ask the agent for a plan first, then let it make the change.
  3. Check the result in your EDA tool and note what you had to correct.
  4. Run the same task in any other tool you’re considering.

The evaluation worksheet has fields for the setup, results and decision. For a worked example with timings and costs, see the ESC G431 placement results in Can Claude Code design a PCB?, and for other products, AI electronics design tools compared.
